zaku zaku

Installation views at Southern Exposure, San Francisco, CA (August, 1992). Mixed media, custom electronics, sound (dimensions variable)

Audio speakers hanging from suspended pulleys broadcast the sounds of people speaking in several languages of situations beyond their physical or psychological control. Also intermittently audible are the sounds of crowds, uncontrolled laughter, and electronic malfunction. The floor is covered in a layer of salt, and the sound of viewers walking across the salt is occasionally amplified, thus temporarily obscuring the other sounds. The title is a Japanese phrase that describes the sound of walking over gravel or frost.
